What are Kanji?

The Japanese term kanji literally means "Han characters". The kanji symbol for kanji is located in the top-left corner of this page.

Kanji symbols came to Japan from China, most likely from Chinese immigrants. At the time, the Japanese language had no written form. These Chinese characters developed into a written language in Japan called kanji.

The modern Japanese language uses kanji symbols together with other forms of Japanese writing.

Today, kanji symbols are a creative and artistic way of portraying a strong emotion or belief...very often in the form of a tattoo. We offer something a little less permanent: an iron-on symbol for you to put on any article of clothing.
